1. Plant FertilizerI am an avid gardener, so any natural way I can make my harvest more plentiful is exciting to me. Recently, I found that Epsom salt makes a wonderful fertilizer, not only for grass but also for potted plants and veggies. I simply sprinkle a little salt around the base of each plant once a week and water, and my plants look amazing. To make your grass greener, mix one cup of salt for every gallon of water and use a sprayer to cover your lawn. Repeat this once every two weeks throughout the growing season.

  1. Hi. The only time you should use epsom salt (or dolomite, for that matter) as a fertilizer, is if your soil is magnesium deficient. Too much magnesium in your soil blocks calcium absorption by your plants, and also makes the soil “tighten up” and get hard.

Some symptoms of magnesium surplus and calcium deficiency in your soil are: tight, hard soil that gets easily compacted; lots of dandelions (dandelions are nature’s way of trying to bring calcium up from the subsoil and re-balancing the calcium/magnesium balance in your topsoil); and blossom end rot in your tomatoes.

If you’re in doubt, get a soil test.

  2. Sadly the author of this piece hasn’t the wits to know that Epsom Salts IS a SALT. So what else is erroneous about the article???

  3. Epsom salt is also an amazing detoxifier! As one who has been battling Lyme disease w/a myriad of co-infections, bathing in epsom salts or at least doing a regular foot bath is recommended as a way to help eliminate the toxins created by these horrible diseases. It can also be taken internally to help cleanse the colon. It REALLY works!!! but has the most horrid taste. As this article states, because of the magnesium, a bath is also is a wonderful way to calm before bedtime and reduce muscle pain & spasms.

  4. What is Epsom salt?
Epsom salt, named for a bitter saline spring at Epsom in Surrey, England, is not actually salt but a naturally occurring pure mineral compound of magnesium and sulfate. Long known as a natural remedy for a number of ailments, Epsom salt has numerous health benefits as well as many beauty, household, and gardening-related uses.

Studies have shown that magnesium and sulfate are both readily absorbed through the skin, making Epsom salt baths an easy and ideal way to enjoy the associated health benefits

Magnesium plays a number of roles in the body including regulating the activity of over 325 enzymes, reducing inflammation, helping muscle and nerve function, and helping to prevent artery hardening. Sulfates help improve the absorption of nutrients, flush toxins, and help ease migraine headaches.

  5. Epsom salt is NOT a salt, do your research. What is Epsom salt?

  6. it is a salt. not salt (NA-CL). In chemistry there is acid, base and salt.
    An acid(HCL) added to a base(NAOH) yields a salt(NACL)plus water(H20).

  7. As a chemist I agree with Willyburger chemically speaking it is a salt
Acid + Base = Salt + Water in this case one possible reaction route would be
    H2SO4 + MgOH2 = MgSO4 + 2H2O In water MgSO4 would dissolve creating Mg2+ ions and SO42- ions.

  8. Growing up, my father always made us kids take a cup of epson salts whenever we were coming down with anything, which was always hot and then we’d have a cup of tea to follow that. It tasted horrible, but it worked!
