11. Coffee Cups
Many of you are going to be shocked to learn that in most cases your disposable coffee cup is not recyclable. Most coffee cups contain a layer of wax that prevents the cup from getting soggy but this makes it very difficult for the paper to be extracted from the wax. Starbucks is currently going through trials of using 100 percent recyclable coffee cups.

  1. Good article, interesting . Does it apply to the UK or only USA? I am in England and I do recycling, We put it in special blue plastic bags which are provided for that purpose by the local council for street collection , not the ordinary plastic bags from supermarkets .

  2. This article is great except for a Couple of things mentioned. Back in the seventies when they announced they were going to recycle and we will be able to have massive savings on our garbage collection not recycling collection but our garbage collection, my Dad after getting the mail and reading the letter laughed so hysterically at the written lies that you couldn’t believe how loud my Dad laughed. Firstly people do not read today nor do they can follow directions other than a computer or a handheld device. Secondly when you’re able to put all your trash in one container or separated we have found out through the owner which I happen to know in Virginia of our waste management and recycling companies for recycling and never get separated for recycling even though the containers are picked up individually. Thirdly, the only people saving or making money are the waste management people and recyclers and the huge companies that buy recycled Plastics that are ours from the consumer.

    * NOTE; Our trash and recycling collection costs has never gone down in cost to save us money by going through the extra effort to help our environment and costs have only risen to line the pockets of the big corporations just like our government has done for centuries. Sadly True…

My Dad has since deceased and his laugh can still be heard offering us the biggest scam on the face of the planet by recycling… Plastics are everywhere contaminating our Earth no matter if they are recycled or not… and I am all for recycling but it only has one intention in mind and that’s the dollar.

  3. I live in West Norfolk and the system here is that we put, paper (not tissues or towels etc), glass, tins, plastic food containers and bottles. Basically anything which has the recycle symbol on it, into the green recycle bin. Food waste is collected in a separate container and is probably composted. Although I tend to compost much of my food waste in my own compost “Daleks”. Some also goes to the birds, like stale bread and cooked meats past the use by date for example. We also have a brown bin which is for garden waste. I use it for mainly the woody material which does not compost easily. Shredded paper can either be sent away in the fortnightly brown bin collection or at home for garden compost. The brown bin then goes off to an industrial scale composting facility.
